Open MRI vs Closed MRI: Which Is Right for You?

Understanding the differences between open and closed MRI machines can help you choose the right option for your comfort and diagnostic needs.

When your doctor orders an MRI, you may have a choice between an Open MRI and a Closed (traditional) MRI. Both produce diagnostic images, but they differ in important ways.

Closed MRI: The Traditional Approach

A closed MRI is the standard design: a tube-shaped machine that you lie inside, about 60 cm wide.

Advantages: Higher magnetic field strength (1.5T or 3T), superior image quality for detailed exams, faster scan times, best for brain, spine, and complex imaging.

Challenges: Can feel enclosed or claustrophobic, not ideal for larger patients, louder during operation.

Open MRI: The Comfortable Alternative

An Open MRI has open sides with the magnet above and below you.

Advantages: Much less confining, ideal for claustrophobic patients, accommodates larger body types, a companion can sit with you, less noise.

Considerations: Lower magnetic field strength (0.3T-1.2T), may not be suitable for all exam types, slightly longer scan times.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Open MRI if you: experience anxiety or claustrophobia, have a larger body type, need a companion present, or are a child who needs a parent nearby.

Choose High-Field MRI if you: need the highest image resolution, are having brain, spine, or cardiac MRI, or have a complex diagnostic question.
